mPEAK Coach Training Pathway
Over the last several decades mindfulness has gained a strong reputation for serving individuals who identify with their suffering. But in recent years, as the interest in mindfulness has grown, more and more people have been attracted to these practices for their potential to improve performance as well as enhance overall quality of life. Now you can be trained and certified to lead others along the path of mindfulness for performance enhancement through the highly reputable UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness Professional Training Institute.
The process to becoming a fully certified mPEAK coach through the UC San Diego can be completed in 4 phases:
3-Day Coach Training Intensive (in-person) + 4 week Integration Session (virtual)
10-Week Practicum (virtual)
9-Week Mentorship Process (virtual)
4-Day mFLOW Retreat (in-person)
Each phase involves more extensive prerequisites, as well as a greater understanding of the mPEAK methodology, more advanced teaching competency and a deeper commitment to personal practice. Below is an outline of the four phases in the Coach Training Pathway.
Module 1: mPEAK Coach Training Intensive (CTI)
The mPEAK Coach Training Intensive is for existing and aspiring mindfulness teachers who are interested in working with athletes, executives, leaders, musicians, dancers, law enforcement, first responders and anyone who has a commitment to performing at their best, without sacrificing their wellbeing.
Participants will use this immersive CTI experience to learn:
Best practices for guiding mindfulness meditations to high performers
International Coach Federation (ICF) core coaching skills, applied to groups
The essential elements of delivering a 60-90 minutes presentation on “An Introduction to Mindfulness and Performance”
Additionally, participants will reflect on their ability to present these foundational elements with integrity, presence and the core competencies for becoming an effective and skillful mPEAK coach. The course will consist of experiential exercises and didactic discussions, as well as partner and group work that encourages the embodiment of the foundational attitudes of a mindful performer.
Upon completion of the 3-day mPEAK Coach Training Intensive and the 4-weeks of virtual integration sessions, participants are known as “mPEAK Coaches-in-Training”. At this phase, Coaches-in-Training can share mindfulness meditation practices with friends, teammates, students and clients as well as coach them to integrate basic mindfulness skills into areas of performance. Coaches-in-Training may feel confident in offering a short (90min) presentation on Mindfulness and Performance but are not yet qualified to teach an mPEAK course.
Sample Schedule
Monday & Tuesday, 8-5pm PT
Wednesday, 8-12:00pm PT
4-Week virtual Follow up sessions, Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00PT (starting the following week)
Prerequisites for Enrollment in CTI
It is widely acknowledged within the field that many of the skills needed to proficiently teach mindfulness arises out of ones personal meditation practice. mPEAK is not a curriculum that can be delivered through memorization alone, rather, it must be embodied. Therefore in the field of mindfulness, the teacher or coach must have adequate experiential grounding in mindfulness practices. To be eligable to apply for the CTI, participants must have:
A consistent mindfulness meditation practice for at least one year (average of 15 minutes/day, 5 days/week…or more)
Professional experience as a mindfulness teacher or experience in a performance related context (Athletic Coach, Sports Psychologist, Therapist, Teacher, Personal Trainer, Physical Therapist, Leadership or Executive Coach, Yoga Instructor, etc.)
Previous participation in an introductory mindfulness course of any kind, including mPEAK (8-week course or 3-Day Intensive), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindful Self Compassion (MSC) or UCLA Mindful Awareness Training (MAT).
CTI Retreat: DateTBD
Module 2: The 10-Week mPEAK Practicum
Those wishing to continue with the process of becoming recognized as a “Trained mPEAK Coaches” must complete an additional 10-week virtual mPEAK Coach Training Practicum. The Practicum is delivered via 2.5 hour zoom session, once a week for ten weeks. This module moves beyond development of coaching skills and guiding meditation to focus on gaining the competency to deliver the full mPEAK curriculum in the 8-Week format. Each week selected participants will present specific elements of the mPEAK curricula including: meditation, coaching, experiential exercises and didactic sections on the following topics:
Intro to Mindfulness & Performance
Interoceptive Resilience
Performance Stories
Priming for Flow
Working with Pain & Difficulty
Your Inner Coaches
Strengths in Balance
Living With Intention
Although participants will receive a detailed manual outlining the mPEAK curriculum, participants are encouraged to customize their delivery with their own creative spin including their own slide deck, favorite resources, personal stories and unique examples. Feedback from the group and the course facilitator is meant to enhance learning but is also a great opportunity to practice mindfulness.
Upon completion of the virtual mPEAK Coach Training Practicum, participants may promote themselves as Trained mPEAK Coaches and begin offering mPEAK in the 8-Week format during the final phase of certification: Mentorship.
Prerequisites for enrolling in the 10-Week Practicum
Attendance and participation in the mPEAK 8-week course or 3-day Intensive
Completion of the mPEAK Coach Training Intensive (CTI)
Experience with guiding 8 people through a 20 minute meditation with follow up coaching
Experience offering one hour long Introduction to Mindfulness Session to peers, co-workers or teammates.
Sample Schedule:
One weekday/week from 4:00PST-6:30PST. CTI graduates are polled to find the day that works best for the majority of the cohort.
Participants report investing 4-7 hours of preparation per week.
10- Week Practicum: Dates TBD
*Only open to mPEAK CTI graduates
Module 3: mPEAK Mentorship
If a participant wishes to become a fully Certified mPEAK Coach, they must apply for mentorship and complete 9-weekly mentorship sessions with an mPEAK Mentor during the process of leading their own 8-week mPEAK course with between 8-15 participants.
Participants are encouraged to partner with others from their mPEAK certification cohort to share the promotional efforts and co-lead their first mPEAK course. Mentorship sessions are offered 1:1 or to small groups of up to four participants.
Each mentorship session will focus on supporting Coaches-in-Training to prepare for upcoming classes as well as process the learning and review the challenges from each previous class.
Common Opportunities include:
Reflecting on the Coaches “embodied presence”
Process moments of flow, letting go and “trusting emergence”
Acknowledge the mindful use of strengths
Acknowledge moments of non-reactivity or compassion
Common Challenges include:
Reflect on the mindful use of time
Discuss difficult participant interactions
Reflect on moments of performance anxiety
Acknowledge moments of reactivity or judgment
Because embodiment of mindfulness and the foundational attitudes of mPEAK is essential to becoming an effective mPEAK Coach, Mentorship will also focus on the personal daily practice of the Coach-in-Training. We say “you must practice mPEAK while coaching mPEAK”. The Mentee will check-in each week around the progress of their own meditations and application of mIndfulness to their established intentions.
Mentorship is also used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Coaches in Training. This is most often done by the mentee’s own self-report and subjective evaluation of their performance but there are times when video recordings of various sections of the mPEAK curriculum may be requested. In the case of a video request, permission from students to record the session must be granted before recordings can be reviewed and evaluated during the following mentorship session.
Upon completion of the mentorship sessions, certification is awarded at the discretion of the mPEAK Mentor. If after the Trained mPEAK Coach has completed these initial three phases of training, it is determined that they are still not yet ready to be certified by UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness, the Coach-in-Training and the Mentor together will co-create a plan for continued support until the professional standards for certification have been met. There may be additional fees for the agreed upon extra support. It is the intention of the Mentors to support Mentees in moving toward certification as efficiently as is skillfully possible.
Sample Schedule
Mentorship can be scheduled at the convenience of the mentee as soon as their mPEAK 8-week course has been scheduled with a minimum of 8 participants.
Module 4: mFLOW Retreat
This in-person module is open to all and can be taken at any time during the certification process.
